Zambian Startups vs. the World: How We Rank & What Needs to Change

In the 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Index by StartupBlink, Zambia is noticeably missing from the global top 100 startup ecosystems. While nearby countries like Kenya, South Africa, and even Cape Verde are climbing the ranks, Zambia has yet to make its mark. The big question is: Why?

At Mamphost, we believe in Zambia’s potential but potential alone won’t put us on the map. If we want to compete with global startup hubs, we must first understand where we stand and what needs to change.

Zambia’s Absence: A Wake-Up Call

Let’s look at how other countries in Africa are performing:

  • Kenya: Ranked 58th globally with over 30% ecosystem growth
  • Cape Verde: Ranked 75th with 22.8% growth
  • South Africa: Ranked 52nd, remains a regional heavyweight
  • Nigeria: Ranked 66th, despite funding challenges
  • Zambia: Not in the top 100

This isn’t just a statistics, it’s a signal. Our startups, entrepreneurs, and tech visionaries deserve better visibility, infrastructure, and support.

4 Reasons Why Zambia Is Behind

1. Lack of Ecosystem Mapping & Visibility

Unlike countries that track and promote their startup ecosystems using platforms like StartupBlink or Crunchbase, Zambia has few centralized efforts. Our startups remain invisible to global investors.

2. Digital Infrastructure Gaps

From hosting to cybersecurity, many startups face tech limitations. At Mamphost, we see firsthand how poor infrastructure can cripple great ideas. Startups need fast, reliable hosting, backup, and scalable cloud services to compete globally.

3. Weak Policy Support

Startups thrive in ecosystems where governments offer tax incentives, funding, and legal protections. Zambia is still catching up in offering consistent, entrepreneur-friendly policies.

4. Brain Drain & Limited Talent Support

Many of our brightest minds are leaving for opportunities abroad. Without stronger local opportunities, Zambia will keep losing top talent.

What Needs to Change

  • Put Zambia on the Map—Literally

Create a national startup directory and encourage founders to list on StartupBlink, Crunchbase, and other directories. Mamphost can support with discounted hosting and landing page creation for startups joining these platforms.

More internet access, developer tools, secure cloud hosting, and payment integration options are urgently needed. Mamphost is leading in providing secure hosting and cloud solutions built for Zambian entrepreneurs.

  • Public-Private Collaboration

We need tech hubs, incubators, and accelerators supported by both government and private sector partners.

  • Celebrate Zambian Success Stories
